Learners create a movement map where each part receives one function: preparation, development, contrast, return, or ending. This map helps define why a section exists and what kind of change it should introduce.

The practical exercise analyzes a short composition outline. Learners mark where density, rhythmic motifs, layer count, and accent character change. They then prepare a revised version with a clearer direction.

Module 2. The Density Curve

Density describes how many events occur within a selected part. It may change through additional layers, more frequent hits, longer musical phrases, or fewer pauses.

The module presents three density levels: low, medium, and high. Low density leaves open space, medium density forms the main working section, and high density creates a strong contrast.

Learners build a density curve for eight or twelve sections. The graph records how full each part feels and reveals whether the composition remains at one level for too long.

The practical task includes three versions of one fragment. The rhythmic motif remains unchanged, while the number of active layers and the amount of open space vary.

Module 3. Tension and Release

Composition tension may develop through repetition, expectation, increasing event count, or delaying a familiar accent. Release occurs when the main rhythm returns, supporting layers are reduced, or a phrase reaches a clear ending.

The module examines several methods for building tension without adding excessive detail. Learners work with pauses, repeated short motifs, revised phrase endings, and gradually reduced open space.

The practical exercise contains two parts. The first creates a four-bar preparation, and the second provides a section that resolves the accumulated movement. Learners compare which changes create a clear expectation and which ones feel unrelated.

Module 4. Phrases of Different Lengths

A composition may lose natural movement when every rhythmic and musical phrase has the same length. This module shows how short, medium, and extended phrases can work within one framework.

Learners examine where a phrase begins, reaches its central point, and ends. Special attention is given to phrases that continue across a bar line and create a sense of forward movement.

In the practical task, one motif appears in three forms. The first ends early, the second occupies a complete cycle, and the third continues into the next bar. Learners select the version that matches the function of the section.

Module 5. Contrast With a Shared Connection

A contrasting part should differ from the central section while remaining connected to the overall composition character. Changing every element at once may create the feeling of an unrelated piece.

The module suggests preserving one or two shared markers, such as a rhythmic motif, pause pattern, accent distribution, or low-frequency shape. Other elements can change to create a new direction.

Learners create a contrasting section in three ways. The first changes the rhythmic layer, the second revises the melodic phrase, and the third changes density and space. After reviewing the options, learners select the version that differs from the main section while preserving a shared logic.

Module 6. Transitions Through Layer Movement

A transition does not need to rely on a short inserted phrase. It can also develop through the gradual introduction, removal, or movement of layers between sections.

The module examines four models: buildup, reduction, replacement, and function exchange. During buildup, each following bar introduces one detail. During reduction, the composition gradually returns to its minimum framework.

Replacement means one layer disappears as another appears. Function exchange occurs when an element that previously remained in the background temporarily becomes the central accent.

The practical exercise connects two sections using all four models. Learners record how each model affects continuity.

Module 7. The Central Composition Point

The central point is the section toward which earlier changes have been leading. It does not need to contain the largest number of elements. Its role may be marked by a clear return of the central motif, a change in rhythmic density, or a strong contrast.

Learners examine several methods for highlighting this section. One version uses the complete rhythmic framework, another uses an unexpected reduction, and a third changes the phrase length.

The practical task creates two different central points for one composition map. Learners compare them and choose the version that follows the earlier development more clearly.

Module 8. Returning Familiar Material

Returning the main rhythmic idea helps connect a composition. However, copying the opening section exactly may not support continued movement.

The module shows how familiar material can return with changes in density, accents, phrasing, or low-frequency interaction. The main motif remains recognizable but is adjusted for its new position in the form.

The exercise presents three return types: reduced, expanded, and reinterpreted. The reduced version keeps only the framework. The expanded version adds supporting layers. In the reinterpreted version, the motif takes on another function.

Module 9. Creating a Clear Ending

The ending should show that composition movement is approaching completion. Simply stopping all layers may not create a clear conclusion.

Learners examine gradual density reduction, shorter phrases, repetition of a closing motif, and a return to the minimum rhythmic framework. The role of the final pause is also reviewed.

The practical task creates three endings for one central section. The first uses gradual reduction, the second repeats a closing phrase, and the third briefly returns to the opening motif.

Module 10. Mapping the Extended Form

In this module, learners combine the earlier topics into one composition map. The form contains an opening, initial development, contrasting part, central point, return, and ending.

For every section, learners record:

  • length;
  • density level;
  • active layers;
  • rhythmic motif;
  • transition type;
  • role within the complete movement;
  • tension or release character.

Learners review whether each part differs from the one beside it and whether all changes support a shared direction. Sections may then be shortened, combined, or rearranged.

Module 11. Function-Based Movement Editing

After building the extended form, learners begin the editing process. Instead of making unrelated changes, they use a four-pass system.

The first pass reviews density and identifies areas that remain equally full for too long.

The second pass examines transitions. Learners check whether each change has suitable preparation and whether one transition method appears too frequently.

The third pass reviews motifs. Learners identify where the central idea disappears for too long or returns without noticeable revision.

The fourth pass examines phrase and section endings. A second composition map is then prepared.

Module 12. Flux Module Final Assignment

The final assignment is an extended composition with six or more connected sections. It contains a restrained opening, gradual development, a contrasting part, a central point, a return of familiar material, and an ending.

Learners begin by creating a density map and a list of section functions. They then define one central rhythmic motif and two supporting motifs that appear in different parts.

The work should use at least three transition models, two levels of contrast, and several phrase-length variations. Each decision is recorded in a composition movement journal.

After preparing the first version, learners complete a function-based review. They compare the original and revised maps, describe the changes, and explain the role of every section within the overall development.
